Privacy Policy

This policy explains what Go Solar Finder collects, why, who else can see it, and what you can ask to have done about it. It describes what this site actually does, rather than repeating a generic template.

The short version

You can read every article on this site without giving any personal information at all. There is no login, no newsletter, and no contact form on this site. Personal data is only involved if you choose to leave a comment, or in the limited automatic ways described below.

Comments

Comments are open on articles. If you leave one, the comment form collects:

  • The name and email address you type in. Your name is published with your comment; your email address is not published.
  • The website address you type in, if you choose to give one. It is published as a link on your name.
  • The content of your comment, which is published.
  • Your IP address and your browser's user agent string. WordPress records these automatically with every comment. They help identify spam and abuse.

Comments and their metadata are kept indefinitely, so that follow-up comments from the same person can be recognised and approved rather than held in a queue each time. You can ask for your comment and its associated data to be deleted — see Your rights below.

Comments may be held for manual review before they appear. This site does not use an automated third-party spam-filtering service.

Avatars

If you leave a comment, an anonymised string (a hash) created from your email address may be sent to the Gravatar service to check whether you have an avatar picture associated with that address. Gravatar's privacy policy is at automattic.com/privacy. If you have one, your avatar is shown publicly next to your comment.

Cookies

  • Comment convenience cookies. If you leave a comment, you may opt in — via a checkbox on the form — to storing your name, email address, and website in cookies, so you do not have to retype them next time. These are optional and last up to one year. If you do not tick the box, they are not set.
  • Caching. This site uses LiteSpeed Cache to store and serve pre-built copies of pages so they load faster. Caching may set technical cookies and stores copies of pages on the server. It is used to deliver pages, not to build a profile of you or to track you between sites.
  • Login cookies. Logging in and editing content sets additional cookies. These only ever apply to people who administer the site, not to readers.

Analytics

Advertising

This site displays no advertising and uses no advertising, retargeting, or ad-personalisation networks. If that changes, this policy and the Affiliate Disclosure will be updated to say so.

Embedded content from other websites

Articles may include embedded content — videos, images, documents, or manufacturer resources — from other sites. Embedded content behaves exactly as if you had visited that other site directly. Those sites may collect data about you, set their own cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with the embedded content, including if you have an account and are logged in there. Their policies govern that, not this one.

Forms and email

There is no contact form and no newsletter signup on this site, and none of the data types those would involve is collected.

If you contact the site by email, your email address and whatever you put in your message are held for as long as needed to deal with it. They are not added to any mailing list and not passed to anyone else for marketing.

Server logs

The web host records standard server logs — IP address, request, user agent, and timestamp — as part of serving the site. These are used to deliver pages, diagnose faults, and investigate abuse or attacks.

Backups

The site is backed up using UpdraftPlus. Backups include the site's database, which means a backup contains comment data, including the metadata described above. Backups exist so the site can be restored after a failure, and are retained for that purpose.

Who your data is shared with

Your data is not sold, rented, or traded. It is only handled by:

  • The web host, which stores the site and its database and keeps server logs.
  • Gravatar, in the limited way described under Avatars.
  • Providers of embedded content, if you interact with an embed.
  • Any analytics provider named in the Analytics section above.

If an administrator requests a password reset, their IP address is included in the reset email.

Your rights

Depending on where you live — for example under the UK or EU GDPR — you may have the right to ask for a copy of the personal data held about you, to have it corrected, to have it erased, to restrict or object to how it is used, or to receive it in a portable form.

If you have left comments on this site, you can request an exported file of the personal data held about you, or ask for it to be erased. This does not cover data that must be kept for legal, administrative, or security reasons.

To make a request, use the Contact page. You may also complain to your local data protection authority.

Children

This site is aimed at adults making decisions about solar equipment. It is not directed at children, and personal data is not knowingly collected from them. If you believe a child has provided personal data here, contact the site and it will be removed.

Changes to this policy

This policy is updated when the site changes what it does — for example if analytics, a contact form, a newsletter, or advertising is ever added. Material changes will be reflected here, and the date below will be updated.
